Poorly aligned teeth not only detract from appearance and affect chewing function, but they are also difficult to clean, leading to a higher risk of cavities and periodontal disease. Orthodontics uses braces to move misaligned teeth into proper positions, thereby improving bite function and facial aesthetics. If malocclusion is caused by abnormal jaw development or severe discrepancies, orthodontic treatment may require adjunctive oral and maxillofacial surgery to achieve improvement. Additionally, early treatment for children with bite issues can reduce the complexity of future orthodontic treatment.
Braces can be fixed or removable. It can be made of metal or clear material.
Metal braces are made of stainless steel or synthesized nickel-titanium.
Forces from the wire acts on the teeth and help to relocate them to proper position.
The clear type are made of ceramics or resin.
Fixed braces cannot be removed by patients themselves. The conventional metal
braces are still the most commonly used braces nowadays.
Self ligating bracket system helps to maintain a low friction between the arch wire and bracket, leading to less pain and faster tooth movement.
Braces are mostly attached on the outward-facing side of the teeth, but can as well be attached to the inward-facing side — surfaces of the teeth that face the tongue.Lingual braces are invisible from the outside. It is customized for every patient according to their teeth sizes. It is the only fixed brace that is hidden.
