The area under the eyes is very delicate and it is subject to developing dark discoloration, wrinkles and bulges rather easily, especially with the aging process. Having dark eye circles makes you look tired, dispirited and are thought to have insufficient sleep. Dark eye circles can be present from a young age and the cause would usually be genetic. They can also be formed due to aging, lack of sleep, unhealthy lifestyle. General fatigue, excessive sun exposure, nasal congestion and rubbing of the eyes can make dark eye cirles more apparent> Dark eye circles can be categorized into 4 major types according to the causative factors and clinical differences:
Excessive Pigmentation Skin around the eyes is the thinnest of all and any pigmentation underneath is easy to be spotted. Pigment can be easily deposited under the eyes, in particular it is often seen on people who have the habit of rubbing the eyes or suffers from skin inflammation due to dermatitis. Rubbing the eyes can further cause damage to the capillaries around the eyes and deposition of iron and melanin pigment in the skin, both contributing to darkening of the skin under the eyes.
As we age the fat and the skin below the eyes maybe pulled down and become thin and loose due to the loss of skin volume and elasticity, thereby causing a pouch to form below the eye and the are bordered by a groove known as the tear trough. This may in turn cast a shadow causing an impression of dark eye cirles. The tear trough is a depression over the medial side of the lower eyelids, it is also an age-related change due to the loss of subcutaneous fat with thinning of the skin over the lower eyelid area.
The skin around the eyes is thin and also translucent, and beneath the skin is full of blood capillaries. The blood capillaries undemeath the thin and translucent skin appear as a dark purplish bluish, making the area around the eyes look darker than the rest of the face. This type of dark under-eye circle is common in particular with people suffering from nasal congestion due to allergic rhinitis as there is an overgrowth of blood vessels around the nose and under eye area.
When there is aged-related change due to the loss of facial volume with thinning of the skin over the lower eye region, the lower eyes appear to be hollow and the muscle underneath the eyes thicken and the fatty tissues below the eyes can easily protrude out, resulting in a pouch of fatty tissues under the eyelids and eyebag formation. Combination of the lower eyes hollowness and the overlying protrusion of the lower eyes fat accentuate the shadow in the lower eye region, all of which make dark circles more prominent.
