Double Eyelids Surgery

Double eyelid surgery or upper blepharoplasty is a surgical procedure to improve the appearance of the eyelids, or to create a crease in the upper eyelids. In people who do not have double eyelids or well-defined folds of the eyelids, this procedure can make the eyes appear wider and brighter, resulting in an overall younger and more vibrant appearance.

Different Surgery Techniques

1.Triple Micro-Incisional Method

The triple micro-incisional method combines the suture method with micro-incisions on the upper eyelids, it is also known as “semi-incision and semi-buried suture” technique. The surgeon makes three small (approximately 2mm) incisions on the upper eyelid and embeds the sutures into the deep layer of the upper eyelid via a microsurgery, and the buried sutures for fixating the crease are secured and retracted into the deep recesses of eye muscle. This method achieves a natural and persistent effect of the open incisional approach without creating a continuous cut along the upper eyelid. The sutures are hidden underneath the skin and left permanently. It is ideal for young patients with minimal fat and thin eyelid skin who do not need extra skin and fat removal, and can greatly reduce the recovery time and visible scarring on the eyelid. This method has accrued popularity over recent years and replacing the suture only technique.

2  Partial Incisional Method

Partial Incisional Double Eyelid surgery technique combines the suture crease method with incisional method.  A small incision about 6-10mm is made in the middle or at the end of the eyelids, allowing the removal of excess skin and fat, reduction of muscle or correction of mild eyelid ptosis as necessary. This is a more advanced method of eyelid surgery and offers a rapid and reliable way of double-eyelid creation while limiting postoperative oedema and risk of scarring. The result is very natural and healing time less than the full incision method. Partial Incision Double Eyelid Surgery can benefit people who have thin and mild droopy eyelid, seeking a fast recovery and who desire natural-looking results.

 3. Incisional Method Double Eyelid Surgery

The traditional Incisional double eyelid surgery is also known as open technique. It is recommended for patients with thick droopy eyelid, and for some patients who require revision eyelid surgery. During the procedure, our doctor makes an incision parallel to the lash line, just above the desired crease, and removes a crescent-shaped strip of skin, excess fat and muscle. Several internal stitches then attach the incised skin to the underlying tendon and/or cartilage. Finally a surface suture stitches the skin back together to create the crease. This technique is the most reliable and effective one to create a strong, usually permanent eyelid crease, and the ideal and natural eye shape for everyone. A delicate suture method can minimize scarring. The main disadvantage of this technique is a longer recovery time.

4. Incisional Method Double Eyelid Surgery with Ptosis Repair

As you age, your eyelids stretch, and the muscles supporting them weaken. As a result, excess skin and fat may gather above your eyelids, causing sagging eyebrows, droopy upper lids and sleepy looking eyes. Upper eyelid ptosis, also known as a droopy upper eyelid, making you look older, severely sagging skin around your eyes can interfere with your vision. Patients with congenital eyelid muscle weakness or ptosis mostly have a drowsy look, multilayer folds, or exceedingly low or even inverted eyelashes. If such problems are not diagnosed prior to double eyelid surgery, postoperative asymmetry or unequal eyes are highly likely to occur.

Ptosis correction surgery aims to correct weak eyelid muscles.  It is a type of surgery that repairs droopy eyelids and may involve removing excess skin, muscle and fat. The surgery repositions and tightens the underlying muscles to lift the upper eyelid. This is usually done under local anaesthesia with sedation so that you remain conscious during the surgery, allowing the surgeon to assess the movements of the eyelids, which can help to optimise the outcome. It is especially important to discuss with our doctors for realistic expectation of ptosis correction surgery.

Epicathoplasty

Epicathoplasty is a simple surgical procedure for removal of the mogolian fold typical among the oriental population. The result is slight elevation and opening of the medial portion of the eyes leading to a lengthened appearance.
