Hair Restoration with PRP

Hair Restoration with Platelet Rich Plasma (PRP)

Another in-office solutions to optimize hair growth and minimize further loss is Platelet Rich Plasma (also known as PRP) injections. PRP is derived from the patient’s own blood, and then placed into a centrifuge that rapidly spins the sample, separating out the other components of the blood from the platelets and concentrating them within the plasma. Platelets is a type of blood cell that that help blood clot and stop bleeding by clumping and forming plugs in blood vessel injuries. Platelets also contain countless proteins called growth factors and stem cells, which are key to helping injuries heal.

The application of autologous PRP has been safely used and documented since 1987 in many fields, such as orthopedics, sports medicine, dentistry, wound healing; as well as cosmetic, cardiothoracic, and maxillofacial surgery. Recent research shows that the increased concentration of growth factors in PRP not only decreases hair shedding and stimulates new hair growth, but it also increases the thickness of the hair.

Causes of hair loss:

  • Hereditary androgenetic alopecia (especially male pattern baldness)
  • Suffering from certain diseases such as diabetes, thyroid disorders
  • Infected scalp or damaged skin
  • Hair loss due to physical infection, postpartum or mental stress
  • Receiving radiation therapy or anticancer drugs
  • Malnutrition such as lack of protein or iron

What does PRP do for hair restoration?

PRP Injections are suitable for men and women suffering certain types of alopecia or general hair thinning, looking to prevent more hair loss and promote new hair growth. It is ideal to start treatment at first sign of hair loss and thinning.

PRP injections is typically used in treating hair loss results from androgenetic alopecia, a common condition that causes hair follicles to shrink. In males, this is called male pattern baldness.

How does PRP  Work?

Blood is collected from patient in a specially designed tube which is then centrifuged. During centrifugation, a patented gel within the tubes isolates PRP from other unrequired cells within the blood. PRP is then ready for application by injecting back into the scalp. By activating follicular progenitor cells (adult stem cells) the application of PRP causes weak hair follicles to become healthier and larger, producing more robust hair growth.

Each treatment takes about 45 to 60 minutes. A series of 3 to 4 treatments, each treatment 4-6 weeks apart, are recommended for optimal outcome. New hair growth can be seen as early as 2 months, but is typically evident between 5-8 months and will continue to improve up to a year after treatment.

Because the treatments use a patient’s own tissues, PRP injections are safe and can be administered alone or used in conjunction with other procedures, such as Dr. CJY Hair Filler, for better and longer effect. Other benefits include minimal downtime, short recovery time, and no general anesthesia is required.
